Play Backyard

I thoroughly enjoy watching Mathieu play and am continuously amazed at his attention to the natural world. It's difficult not to sound like a cliched inspirational book or calendar that extols the innocence of children, but .... it is truly a privilege to witness a child discover ... EVERYTHING. At the beach this morning, while playing in tide pools, Mathieu repeatedly poured water over my sand-filled hands just to watch the sand particles sink back into the hole. How did I know that he was watching the sand sink and not just like pouring water? Because he could tell me his discovery!
"Mommy, sand sinking back in ocean."

My friend, Lisa, photographed Mathieu in these pictures. They're not about the beach, but instead, it's our backyard. Mathieu loves playing in the backyard. ("Mommy, go outside. Mathieu play backyard," is a familiar line in our house right now.) These pictures capture Mathieu's sense of exploration and discovery. What a joy it is to daily spend time with someone so in love with life!
